The black spots on the sun. or Sunspot as they are commonly called, have been there since centuries. recent observation with the help powerful telescope, sent to the space show that these spot are nothing but creaters on the surface of the Sun. they appear black as their temperature is much lower than the hot surface of the rest of the Sun.
