Tower of Pisa Leaning
The lean of the leaning tower of tower
of Pisa is because of the weak foundation and unstable subsoil. The site of the
tower was a large river delta in the past. The architects and builders of the
tower were however unaware of this fact. They did not know that the soil was a
mixture of sand, clay and water, which was unsuitable for large buildings. The lean
was noticed for the first time during the construction of the third floor in
A.D. 1178. During the construction of the next three floors, the architects tried
to adjust the lean. This gave the tower a slight banana shape and the tower
began leaning towards south in A.D. 1272. Architects tried to correct the north
side and six steps on the south side at the bell tower. This however, gave the
tower a slight S-shape. Today, gave the tower leans about 5.5 degree towards
south.
